Until about 1920 the Barre Railroad and the Barre & Chelsea thus had almost a monopoly for transporting Barre granite. The golden years though came to an end as trucks entered the scene in the 1920s and gradually conquered more and more sectors of the granite transport business in Barre. By the 1940s trucks had become a major threat to the railroad, that fought back by cutting costs and improving service to survive. After about 60 years the railroad had lost the “battle” for good.

In this talk the competition between railroad and trucks is traced over the decades, the development and the underlying factors are analyzed. The presentation is illustrated by dozens of photos, most of them taken between 1920 and 1950, showing how in particular the trucks evolved in this period. Also covered in detail are the flat cars used by the Barre & Chelsea for transporting granite, with photos showing that several of these cars are still around today.

About the author: Andreas Kuehnpast is an industrial engineer from Germany. In his spare time he researches the Barre Granite Industry and the railroad that served it, the Barre & Chelsea Railroad. As a model railroader he is working on a scale model of the Barre & Chelsea as it was back in 1948.”
